It’s already well known the adoption of information and communications technologies (ICTs) has transformed many parts of the energy and utility sector. Smart grid, demand response and even the emergence of vehicle to grid services are just a few that have been realized as a result of adding intelligent connectivity to the legacy utility industry.

But a new type of network, dubbed 5G, has the potential to be an even greater game changer not only for utilities, but other verticals such as transportation, industrial automation and resource extraction sectors. The game changing aspect is because it’s really fast, has very quick device to device responsiveness (or low latency in technical terms) and promises to significantly improve battery life of devices. (Skip to the end of the article for a Primer on 5G). As a result of a super fast and quick responding wireless network, a whole bunch of applications are enabled, ones that can boost productivity, improve energy efficiency and reduce air pollution and other environmental damages.
