The hype of the electric vehicle has been talked about for some time, but in reality, sales have been minimal at best. According to January 2015 figures from Green Car Reports, slightly more than 5,000 EVs were purchased in Canada in 2014 or about 0.3% of all new vehicle sales. If EV sales are to increase, automakers and dealers need a better understanding of who their best customer may be. Recently released data from Environics Research Group provides some insights on this front.

To date much of the talk surrounding electric vehicles has been the potential negative impacts that an increasingly large number of them can have on the electricity system. But the presence of EVs with an appropriate smart charging infrastructure can help prevent grid capacity issues related to high EV penetration.

A family of four from Surrey BC got the keys to their new Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto this week. Jennifer Ma, Clayton Crawley and their two children leased the vehicle for three years.

A new report from Pollution Probe suggests that Ottawa’s electricity grid is capable of supporting the charging requirements of more than 150,000 electric vehicles, provided Hydro Ottawa is proactive in managing how and when EVs are charged.

The Mercedes-Benz Smart ForTwo Electric Drive Convertible/Coupe has again topped the list of the greenest cars, according to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy’s (ACEEE) 18th annual comprehensive environmental ratings for vehicles.
